Municipal Wi-Fi

"We will not stop until every San Franciscan has access to free wireless-internet service."

Thus spake Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Fransisco, in 2004. The city released its RFP in November last year. From my own perspective of running the SSDN Project - a major component of which is a national broadband interconnect joining every local authority in Scotland (via the JANET Network) - it is interesting to watch progress with this ambitious initiative in California. For instance, take a glance at some questions that came back to the city from potential bidders for the contract - here.

Scotland needs the same level of ambition, the same level of vision - when every citizen in the country has cheap (or even free!) access to decent levels of broadband, that will be the point at which this country joins the exponential curve of the 21st century.
