Xchange Conference

Listening to Jerry D Weast, Superintendent of Schools for Montgomery Public Schools, in the US. He mentioned the perception in the States that education is in crisis. He wonders if there really is a crisis. Is it only a crisis for those who are looking at it from a particular perspective? The 'crisis' is a function of the inability of schooling to keep up with the pace of change. The question is: how should the education system, in whichever country, react to the pace of change? How do we make the system(s) flexible enough to be able to respond to change as it happens?

His big message, though, that we need to ensure that the teacher remains absolutely at the heart of successful schooling. His line is: "technology is only a useful tool in education when it is in the hands of the teacher." Provocative, to say the least, especially when he is speaking to a group of people for whom ICT is central to a high quality modern education system.
