A forgotten book
| I came across a book on my shelves that I had forgotten about. "The School That I'd Like", edited by Edward Blishen, and published by Penguin in 1969, is a long wish-list of ideas and pleas and suggestions from schoolchildren as to how school could be made better. It is long since out of print. Glancing through it once again, while there are lots of suggestions that date the book ("No watery cabbage, milk pudding, lakes of custard, compulsory Latin, PT, teachers' gowns or school hats"), many of the entreaties within its pages are timeless and could just as easily be the words of pupils today. Over the next couple of weeks, I might pepper my postings with random lines from this little gem of a book. |
