Laugh or Cry?

Posted on | December 11, 2008 | 4 Comments

John Naughton’s blog, Memex 1.1, offers a constant stream of brilliant snippets of information and intelligence culled from countless sources around the globe. John, however, chooses not to permit comments on his posts, which is entirely his prerogative, of course.

So, unable to comment, I want to highlight a recent post from John – Ignorance scales new heights.

I promise you that you will read this and not know whether to laugh or cry. As John writes, a “…fascinating insight into the mind of the invincibly ignorant…”

Follow the link back to the source of John’s post, Ken Stark’s blog, and his post Linux: Stop Holding Our Kids Back. Ken is an ‘open source evangelist’ – take some time to read a few of the comments beneath the original post. I especially liked the comment:

“Ignorance isn’t stupidity, but choosing to remain ignorant is.”

Thank you for the generous puff, John. Just to say that the reason I don’t ‘allow’ comments is simply that I would feel obliged to take them seriously and I’m pressed enough for time as it is. So turning off commenting on Memex.naughtons.org is not a symptom of aloofness, just a consequence of there being only 24 hours in a day.

No problem, John. The fact that I can comment on something you write through my own blog is good enough for me. Each of us has to use this medium in the way that best suits or own circumstances.

A good new year to you when it comes.

    John
