Convivial Learning in a Tangled World

I delivered a keynote this morning at the eAssessment Awards event, organized by the eLearning Alliance, and held in the Hilton Dundeee. I somehow managed to keep within my alloted 30 minutes despite that fact that I usually speak without drawing breath for at least 40 or 45 minutes. I have uploaded the slides to SlideShare.
I promised those attending the event that I would post a detailed list of all the references I used in my talk. I will therefore extend this post over the weekend (by Sunday evening at latest) in order to keep my promise. For anyone wanting some of the detail before I post, all or most of the references are already available scattered throughout this blog and should be easily findable using the search tool to the right.
A little belatedly, I offer my references for the talk I gave on Friday – most, if not all, of the references here can be found elsewhere in the blog, but I have pulled them together here for the convenience of those who attend the eAssessment Awards and who want to follow up some of the points I discussed.
- I quoted RF Mackenzie, Scottish educator: “Education is an old ramshackle windmill that goes on flapping its great arms long after the miller has left.” This is taken from his book The Unbowed Head, long out of print, but available from the likes of ABE Books.
- I offered some lines from Pat Kane’s great book The Play Ethic – Pat also writes on the eponymous blog The Play Ethic
- I quoted from a presentation by Australian educationist, Greg Whitby – Greg is the CEO of The Diocese of Parramatta Schools in Sydney, and he blogs at Bluyonder.
- I used some lines from Ivan Illich’s ‘other’ book Tools for Conviviality – the full text of this book can be found online.
- I gave a short line from an interesting book by James Gleick, What Just Happened: A Chronicle from the Information Frontier.
- I used a couple of quotes from my own blog – they can be found in: Thinking out loud…
- I quoted from a great paper by Pithamber R Polsani, called Network Learning. [PDF]
- I used the notion of the Learnscape from Jay Cross – the original text can be found on Flickr, and I created an alternative version on my own Flickr pages.
- The idea of the Creepy Treehouse came, for me at least, from Chris Lott, and was taken up by Jared Stein – some interesting discussion of the notion took place on my blog at Get Out of the Creepy Treehouse!
- I quoted from a book of essays by Sir James Ralph Darling, called Education of a Civilized Man.
- I also quoted Stephen Downes from his piece: The Future of Online Learning: Ten Years On from November 2008.
- Finally, I offered a great line from Jerome Bruner’s Relevance of Education.
