A Race Between Education and Catastrophe

Launched a couple of weeks ago We Are The People We’ve Been Waiting For is a very clever website offering a series of video clips, messages, games and links, and led by the main clip above, which is the trailer designed to draw you into the site. The full video is some 70 minutes long, and can be obtained for free by sending your name and address to: filmteam@bbpr.com.

With the likes of David Puttnam and Michael Barber behind it, it brings together luminaries such as Germaine Greer, Richard Branson, Henry Winkler and Ken Robinson with the simple, central message that education must change, that our schools are not currently serving the needs of our young people or of the world in which we live. The most telling messages come from a number of young people given the chance to speak to us.

Whatever the overall message, and whether or not you agree with that message (no prizes for guessing that I am more than sympathetic), some of the material within the site should prove useful for stimulating discussion in and beyond the classroom. The site also offers a link to a forum hosted by Edge, the education foundation, that allows you to have your say on the issues raised by the content on the We Are The People site – to date, some 15,000 have taken up the opportunity to comment.
