John Connell: The Blog

The point is not to interpret the world but to change it.

If you happen to be passing…

….Blackwell Books on the South Bridge in Edinbugh (or Thins as some of us still like to call it) between now and Sunday 20th December, why not pop in, find the Children’s Book Tree in the store, pick a tag hanging on the tree, and use the information on the tag to buy a book for a young boy or girl. These are children who might not otherwise expect to receive a whole lot this Christmas.

The tags have been written by the children themselves, describing their interests. All you have to do is buy a book that suits the interests of the child whose tag you picked (staff will help out if you’re not too sure). Having bought the book, you then leave it behind in the shop so that it can be wrapped up by the staff and handed over to the correct child before Christmas Day.

Thanks to Hilery Williams for the link.

And…isn’t this an idea that deserves to be spread far and wide, to bookshops all over the country? The Children’s Book Tree has a Facebook page if anyone wants to follow this lovely idea up and take it to other airts and pairts, even if only for next Christmas.

Nice idea! I’ll pop in. I also refer to the shop as Thins – unless I’m talking to a youngster :-) And now, if you’ll excuse me, I must get back to listening to the wireless…
