Semantic Web and Social Networks

Posted on | April 10, 2007 | 2 Comments

Looking back through some recent posts in Judy O’Connell’s blog, I was reminded of this chart showing the Semantics of Information Connections and Social Connections. There’s a lot to think about in this diagram, not least whether the concept of the ‘Semantic Web’ really does have any ‘legs’, as they say. Or is it possible to say that aspects of the concept are already in existence? I’ve never really been able to grasp the potential behind what, for me, is still a vague and amorphuous ideal.

John, It is interesting to see how Ning is developing in this context – the ‘myspace’ for the rest of us? I am sure other social networking platforms will continue to emerge, and I am tipping that the semantic web will merge with networking based on a single identitiy (OpenID?) and personalised data-mining coupled with more developed forms of RSS and personalisation of Web 20 ‘as platform’.

I haven’t looked at Ning yet, Judy, but I definitely will now. Just finished a remarkable day in Costa Rica talking to (and listening to) an amazing group of people. I’ll post on it when I have time in the next day or so.
