SNP Commitment to Glow?

Posted on | June 25, 2007 | 2 Comments

In a democracy, every newly-elected administration has the right – the duty indeed – to examine all the initiatives started under previous administrations to test their continuing viability in terms of value-for-money or in relation to their own manifesto commitments.

The new SNP administration in the Scottish Parliament, I am sure, will be doing just that. Many of their commitments will not come cheap.

However, there is one Scottish initiative that I feel a particular connection to, so I hope that the second of two Parliamentary Questions asked a few days ago by MSP Ken Macintosh is given the answer I for one would want to hear.

The questions are:

S3W-1398 Ken Macintosh: To ask the Scottish Executive what progress has been made in establishing the Scottish Schools Digital Network.

S3W-1399 Ken Macintosh: To ask the Scottish Executive whether it remains committed to funding the Scottish Schools Digital Network.

The questions require a reply by 19th July.

Now would be a good time to communicate with your elected representative, especially if he or she is an SNP member, and help ensure the reply is the correct one!

    remember …

S2M-2749 Stewart Stevenson (Banff and Buchan) (SNP) : 50 Million Copies of the Firefox Browser: A Victory for Open Source Software— That the Parliament congratulates the volunteers working with the Mozilla Foundation on achieving the first 50 million downloads of the free and open source internet browser, Firefox; notes that it is efficient and secure because its workings can be examined by anyone, thus leading to continuous improvement, and believes that the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body should consider replacing the bloated, slow, middle-aged and frequently insecure commercial product currently installed on its computers with Firefox.

S2M-360# Nicola Sturgeon (Glasgow) (SNP) : Open Source Software—That the Parliament congratulates the SNP Members of the European Parliament, their colleagues in the Green/European Free Alliance group and, in particular, Prof Neil MacCormick MEP for being at the forefront of the campaign in the European Parliament to defend the interests of the open-source software industry; notes that a number of public bodies across Europe have switched to open source software systems; further notes that the SNP group in the European Parliament has called on the EU institutions to look into switching to open source software, and considers that the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body should investigate the feasibility of the Parliament making greater use of such software with a view to switching to open source software in the future.

I do not usually accept anonymous comments, so please come out from behind your cover and explain your point. If it is the one I think you are making then I believe you completely miss the point about SSDN/Glow.
