The Open Call for Papers, conference themes and other details were posted this morning for the eLearning Africa Conference 2008, taking place in Accra, Ghana, at the end of May next year. This will be the third of the eLearning Africa conferences, and next year’s event will build on the huge success of the 2007 event hosted by the Kenyan Government.
I am privileged to have been asked to join the Advisory Committee for the conference and I am looking forward to playing a small part in ensuring the event’s continuing success. The 2007 event had more than 1400 participants from almost 90 countries around the world, three-quarters of them from the African continent itself.
The 16 powerful themes for the 2008 conference reflect the wide-ranging interests of those who will be attending:
- Unleashing the Capabilities of Universities Through Information and Communication Technologies
- Corporate eLearning in Africa and Beyond
- Introducing eLearning into the School System
- Designing and Delivering eLearning
- Building the Infrastructure for Education in the 21st Century
- Open Source and Open Content
- eLearning in Medical Education and the Fight Against HIV and AIDS
- Advanced Technology Developments
- eLearning Supported by Development Partners
- Empowering Women Through ICT and eLearning
- Improving the Quality and Outreach of Technical and Vocational Education
- Libraries as Access Providers to Resources and Expertise
- Quality Development and Quality Assurance
- Achieving Inclusivity Through eLearning
- eLearning for the Public Sector
- Policy Issues and Large-Scale Take-Up of Learning

Opportunities exist to lead a workshop or seminar, to give a presentation, to suggest a topic for debate, to suggest a special focus session on an area of particular interest, to give a demonstration, or to offer a course/module in the Best Practice Showcase.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is Friday, December 7, 2007.
As Tim Unwin notes in the short video from the 2007 event available on the site:
“If you’re in eLearning in Africa, you’ve got to be here!”

Hi John – great to see you involved. I recently sent Rebecca an email congratulating her on the success of the 2007 elearning in Africa conference. I’ve heard great things from numerous colleagues. Society’s focus will increasingly be shifted to these developing regions…and it is important that we are involved in the dialogue. Best wishes as you move forward with planning the event.

Good to hear from you, George. I’m really looking forward to this event – my involvement in education in Africa is very slight so far but it is, as you say, an area of increased focus. I know from colleagues that this year’s event was highly successful, so next year’s conference should be worth looking forward to.
