Asus EePC / RM Minibook

Thanks to Ewan for the link. Great little video piece on the Asus EeePC from my friends at Learning and Teaching Scotland – with Andrew Brown (who has shared his own thoughts on the machine) playing second string to the tiny machine itself.

I just wanted to respond to the video that John posted (which involves Andrew Brown). Thanks much for this post. I watched you guys keenly and listened well to your review of the ASUS EeePC. I’d just like to say that I was so impressed by your demo and comments. That I went out and bought one a few hours after watch the video. Thanks for the detailed review.
I am extremely happy with this device and am using it extensively now at work and at home
And kudos to ASUS for such a wonderful device. This is perfect for the road warrior indeed!

Why didn’t I get that commissioning fee worked out
Just so that you know, curiously ‘PC World’ has them in stock – even though they are pretty much impossible to find anywhere else on the planet at the moment!

I need a good portable laptop to use for my school work. If i write a document on the Asus eeepc will windows xp support the document?
Thanks, Alex

Alex – the EePC comes bundled with OpenOffice, which creates documents that are campatible with Microsoft Office, so you would have no problem moving files from the Asus to a Windows environment. John

I have just been into a Toys R Us store to see if they had any stock of the Asus eee PC left and I was told that all stores are getting stock this coming Saturday (29th Dec) Can’t wait to get my hands on one after reading the reviews!

I just bought the EEE Pc and it really is fast and easy to operate. The only issue so far is if I plug in a USB device or SD card I get an error saying I ‘Don’t have enough permissions’ . Any ideas out there?

Just received one of these to play with from my boss. Looking to do a trial with them in my LA in a few months. I have the Linux model with 4GB hard drive and it works really well. Quick to boot and the basic open office suite is available. The great thing about these machines is the wireless connectivity to the Net using Firefox. Haven’t found a site yet that it can’t handle. We are looking at these as a cost effective device for KS2 children. If you buy in bulk the price goes down to around £160 per unit. This is then about £2 a week for parents for a couple of years and then every child owns one. With lots of resources and applications now becoming web based this could be a really useful device for pupils to use on daily basis; why slow it down and bump up the price with loading XP?

I agree, Paul, stick with Linux! I intend to get hold of one within the next week or so, mainly to allow me to work while travelling economy around the world.

Does anyone know whether Asus will be producing a 10″ screen for the eepc? I’ve read about it in various places.
February 21st, 2008 @ 9:36 pm
Richard – Asus themselves have pretty much scorched that rumour. They will be producing an 8″ version with the same resolution (800×460), and then an 8.9″ version with a higher resolution (1024×600) – expect them 2nd/3rd quarter 2008 respectively.
