Simone White: better than an Audi!

Posted on | January 21, 2008 | Comments Off

If you have seen and heard the recent Audi advert on TV and, like me, you know you can’t afford a new Audi, then console yourself by downloading (what, you still buy CDs?) the recent album from Simone White, I am the Man. She wrote and sings The Beep Beep Song used in the ad. She has a wonderful quirky intimate voice, and she writes compelling and tuneful songs which range from the political to the whimsical to the funny to the heart-rending.

While she does a a superb version of Goffin and King’s “I Didn’t Have Any Summer Romance”, she has a number of stand-out great songs from her own pen: The Roses are not Red, We Used to Stand so Tall, and of course, all 1:39 of the Beep Beep Song. For me, though, there isn’t a poor piece on the whole album.

It’s plain that she writes on the guitar and this gives her songs a fundamental simplicity that appeals to me (it also gives me hope that maybe one day I’ll write a decent song on the guitar – nothing so far, dammit!).
