Cake for all

Will Richardson quotes Jeff Jarvis:

“Why should my son or daughter have to pick a single college and with it only the teachers and courses offered there?”

And:

“…why shouldn“t professors be able to pick their own students from among the best of the bunch, not just those from his or her institution?”

I hope I am not the only one who can see the dangers in this for young people from poorer backgrounds who already have the system weighted against them and who would in all probability fare even worse in a situation such as the one described by Jeff.

I share, I believe, the core of Jeff’s vision, but I would also want to build in mechanisms to protect those who have no leverage within the system as it stands. What would such mechanisms look like? How would they work? Is it possible to have our cake and eat it?
