The Tawdry Scotsman

Posted on | March 8, 2008 | 2 Comments

I don’t need any more reasons not to read the Scotsman – this once fine liberal newspaper is now just a tawdry shell of what it used to be before Andrew Neil and his ilk got their hands on it. But their decision to print an off-the-record remark from Sam Power about Hillary Clinton, Obama’s foreign policy adviser, just adds to their reputation for tawdriness. The queue of people waiting to be interviewed in future by Gerri Peev could be a short one!

Mike Gibson’s attempt to justify their shabbiness just doesn’t wash.

On the contrary, this is about the only decent story the Scotsman has run for ages. Unless I’m mistaken, our national newspaper has just impacted the US presidential election because a journalist there refused to join the cosy self-censoring world of the Fleet Street/US mob. Wrong target here, John. If The Scotsman had more stories like that, it would be a far better read than the yawn-a-thon it has steadily become. This is a bolt from the blue, and a reminder what it was like to reid in the pre-Neil days.

Whether or not this finally proves The Scotsman has gone to hell in hand basket, I finally realised Mr. Neil was beyond redemption on Thursday when I had the misfortune to see his ’shirt-undone-to-the-navel-comfy-sofa-politics-lite’ programme “This Week” which featured Jade Goody presenting an article on binge drinking.
