VoIP and Unified Communications: where are they at?

Posted on | July 22, 2008 | 2 Comments

Jon Arnold is a sharp and highly readable observer of the IP Communications industry and his blog is a great way to keep up to date with happenings in that particular sphere. Jon has recently sparked off an interesting conversation on the current status of Voice over IP (VoIP) as well as the state of play for Unified Communications. As is usual for Jon, his initial post picks up on two or three posts from other sources to get the ball rolling, and he adds his own thoughts into the mix as he goes along.

The basic question being asked is: is VoIP happening? In other words, is it reaching the market share across various segments that it might have been expected to attain by now? An interesting discussion has ensued, and you can follow the thread to various other commentators via Jon’s posts, including a detailed exposition on the UC situation generally from Ken Camp.

I particularly like Ken’s take on UC:

“Unified communications in a foundation mindset of a single, integrated platform for doing business. Simple.”

In reading these articles on IP communications and UC in particular I don’t get a feeling that the commentators are actually in touch with real world business users. Its an incestuous club of guys who politely agree with one another and exchange links. Their audience is clearly the IP industry, IP geeks and other commentators, but not business users. Succinct definitions of terms such as UC are interesting, but it would be even more useful if an SMB could pinpoint the specific PAIN that UC is supposed to address. Personally I’m left with the impression that UC is sizzle, product(s) or rather concepts in search of a problem.

I guess it’s all about perspective. UC is not something that deals with a specific ‘pain’ as such, although I understand the need for IT Managers to need a justification in the short term to move in that direction. I think it’s more about the inevitable logic of converged IP networks – the shift to that may be quicker and slower in different sectors, different geographies, but in the long run it will happen. UC is merely the ‘face’ of a converged IP network in which all communications – voice, video, data, wireless – are conducted over the IP network.
