Charles Leadbetter: the ‘I can’ generation

I’m listening to Charles Leadbetter’s Keynote at the Scottish Learning Festival. I liked his comment, that the current generation is (to paraphrase him): “….a generation infused with an attitude of ‘I can’, and not the attitude of ‘i want’ or ‘I hope’ that perhaps typified earlier generations.”
As a member of the baby boomer generation (vintage 1957), it might be interesting to speculate on the effect that the ‘i want’ or ‘i hope’ attitudes have had on our lives – what effect have they had on the way we have lived (and are still living) our lives, on the nature and place of ambition in our lives (for instance).
And, equally, how will the ‘I can’ generation be different in these respects as they live their lives?
