John Connell's Bookshelf
test
I buy lots of books! Some new, some second-hand. One of my favourite places in the UK is Hay-on-Wye (Y Gelli to my Welsh-speaking friends) - the 'Town of Books'. Go visit!

I list a few recent purchases here that I would certainly recommend.

JARED DIAMOND
"COLLAPSE"
Diamond paints on a vast canvas - hugely insightful

THOMAS L FRIEDMAN
"THE WORLD IS FLAT"
The world still looks damned bumpy to me, but if you're willing to re-nterpret, you can take a lot from this book
JOHN McMILLAN
"REINVENTING THE BAZAAR"
A fundamentalist 'marketeer' with more than a few blind spots, but an assured writer
FRANCES WHEEN
"MARX'S DAS KAPITAL"
Interesting and justified view of 'Capital' as a work of literature, not merely a political & economic tract

MALCOLM GLADWELL
"THE TIPPING POINT"
Quirky, anecdote-laden - Gladwell stretches his central thesis somewhat, but fun to read

JOSEPH STIGLITZ
"GLOBALIZATION AND ITS DISCONTENTS"
World Bank economist with a willingness to disagree with the established views on global economics
JARED DIAMOND
"GUNS, GERMS AND STEEL"
An earlier work from this humane and humanitarian writer and thinker - - always worth reading!
DANIEL PINK
"A WHOLE NEW MIND"
Worth reading - but I wasn't wholly convinced!
JEFFREY SACHS
"THE END OF POVERTY"
Skip the foreward by Bono - a strong message about global poverty and the reality of the 'developed' world's response
WENDY GROSSMAN
"FROM ANARCHY TO POWER"
By no means a recent book, but many insights into the Web phenomenon that stand the test of time!
DYLAN THOMAS
"COLLECTED POEMS
1934-1953"
On a visit to quiet and serene Laugharne - what else could I buy?
BILL BRYSON
"A SHORT HISTORY OF NEARLY EVERYTHING"
Travel writer extraordinaire turned science historian - and, boy, does he do it well !!
